Mattress Types: Guide and Comparisons

Now that you’ve decided on the mattress size you’ll need, it’s time to determine what style of mattress will meet your requirements. But where do you even begin? How exactly does the firmness or softness of a mattress affect the quality of your sleep? Maybe it’s time for a remote-controlled adjustable base to raise your head and feet? Do you have specific needs that need to be met to help alleviate medical issues? Have you used the same old style of mattress for years, and now your neck and back are begging for a change? Or maybe, you happened to recently buy another mattress at that other store, but it’s not quite all they made it out to be. No one wants to spend hours of their free time in a store laying on mattresses, even if they ARE comfortable! That Mattress Place Corpus Christi offers brands such as Sapphire Sleep, Beautyrest, nature’s sleep, and more all in house at the best prices in town. Read below for some quick comparisons on a few popular mattress types.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their comfort factor. Foam mattresses are made of a material that softens in response to heat and pressure. This response to heat means the mattress conforms to your body, providing pressure relief and reducing pressure points as your weight is more evenly distributed across the mattress surface. Long-term use has even been shown to reduce chronic back and neck pain. There is no sagging, and no need to turn or flip to maintain its shape. Better still, there are no squeaks or creaks, and low to no motion transfer means you won’t disturb your partner while shifting during sleep.

Memory foam retains heat, which can be a big problem for someone who already sleeps hot. Cooler temperatures are proven to be more conducive to more consistent sleep. Gel memory foam mattresses and pillows can help alleviate this issue. That Mattress Place also offers Nordic Chill cool gel “snow pillows” to help disperse heat. Low-quality memory foam mattresses tend to be manufactured using toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and contain isocyanates, which have been shown to cause issues such as asthma and skin irritation. CertiPUR-US ® products meet standards for content, emissions, and durability.

Inner spring

Innerspring mattresses are the most common type of mattress sold. They are constructed of steel coils that compress when you put weight on them, and coil mattresses tend to be popular due to selling points such as flexibility, durability, and price. Coil count is an important factor for this type of bed. Higher numbers of coils tend to signify better quality and comfort. An innerspring mattress is also very good for people who like to have several options for sleep positions, supporting side, back, and stomach sleepers with the right levels of comfort as well as support. Innerspring mattresses can be made with different types of padding on top of the coils to provide a comfortable layer such as latex, a pillow top mattress, or even gel memory foam. The main types of coils include hourglass coils, pocketed coils, and continuous coils.

However, innerspring beds tend to wear out faster. While you’ll experience more springiness and bounce, you may find that you’ll need to replace an innerspring mattress sooner than you would another type of mattress. You may also experience audible squeaking when you move around on the bed, which is less than ideal.

Hybrid mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine the best of both worlds. They provide the support and bounce of an innerspring mattress, with the comfort and softness of latex or memory foam (and motion isolation to boot). Beautyrest introduced the first hybrid mattress, and now offers a range of products to provide a more custom experience. They also boast better contour abilities compared to latex and other mattresses.

Hybrid mattresses are often heavy and difficult to move and can feature high motion transfer with the wrong construction. Since there is higher complexity and demand for hybrid products, you can often expect to pay a higher price than you would otherwise pay for mattresses of similar quality.

Deciding the best time to replace your mattress is based on multiple factors that must be taken into consideration when making your next investment. You may ask yourself, “How long am I supposed to keep my mattress?” or “What are some of the signs that it’s time to replace my mattress?” The best way to decipher this is to think about your mattresses comfort level and how and when you purchased it.

Indicators such as recent back, shoulder, and neck pain relay that the comfort of the mattress is beginning to waiver. If you purchased your mattress over five years ago and bought your mattress second-hand, the overall quality and wear will likely have begun to diminish after everyday use.

That Mattress Place Corpus Christi offers reliable, knowledgeable, and courteous staff that will help direct you to the best mattress that fits your comfort and budgetary guidelines. We offer a range of Pillowtop, Euro Top, and Specialty brand name mattresses at up to 50-80% off the prices of normal mattress retailers with financing options that suit everyone’s needs.

A quick guide to choosing the right mattress size 1024 683 Jonathan Swindle

A quick guide to choosing the right mattress size

We’ve all been there: you fall asleep on the couch after a long day, and the older you get, the harder it is to get up hours later. Your body aches all over and you’re usually not well-rested, either. We need room to move during sleep, and having room to stretch can help promote better rest; that’s why choosing the right mattress size is just as important as mattress type and your buying experience. Many buyers stick with the mattress size they are familiar with, but according to The Better Sleep Council, buying a too-small mattress is one of the biggest mistakes new bed-buyers make. Don’t forget you’ll need to take into account your room size and any furniture you may already have, such as nightstands or desks. Here are some recommendations on the most standard mattress sizes to help you find your best fit.

Twin Mattress – 38″ x 75″

A twin-sized mattress is approximately 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. This is the smallest size after a crib-size mattress and can be a decent size for a guest bed, daybed, or bunk bed, especially in a smaller room. A twin mattress may be a good choice for a child who has outgrown their crib, but will probably be too short for some adults. Per The Sleep Judge, the recommended room size for this bed is 7’ x 10’ or 10’ x 10’ for two twin beds in the same room.

Twin XL – 38″ x 80″

A twin XL mattress is the same width as a regular twin (around 38 inches) but features an extra 5 inches length-wise (80 inches) which is the same length as a queen or king mattress. The extra length makes it a good option for taller children and is typically the size found in dorm rooms. Two twin XL beds will also fit in a king frame for couples who don’t enjoy the same level of firmness or softness as their partner. The recommended room size for this bed would be 7’ x 10’.

Full – 53″ x 75″

A twin mattress may seem like the right fit for a young child, but a full mattress will give your child room to grow from their childhood into their teen years. A full mattress is really only large enough for a single sleeper, and at the same length of a twin, is again probably too short for many. Parents may prefer to choose full mattresses over a twin to give themselves a more comfortable place when reading to children at bedtime and to avoid their child outgrowing the bed too quickly. The recommended room size for this bed would be 10’ x 12’.

Queen – 60″ x 80″

Queen mattress dimensions are 60 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long – 7 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full-size mattress. Single sleepers who prefer plenty of space will find a queen-sized mattress a good fit for a restful sleep after a hard day at work. A queen is a popular mattress size for master bedrooms, as well as couples that don’t require much sleeping space or who need more room to maneuver. It’s also an ideal choice for guest rooms, or for people who share their bed with children or pets. The recommended room size for this bed would be anywhere from 10’ x 10’ – 10’ x 14’ depending on how much space you need to move.

King – 76″ x 80″

The king-size mattress dimensions are 76 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long, which provides about 16 more inches than a queen. A king-size mattress is the best choice for couples who need more personal space during sleep. As previously mentioned, twin XL beds will also fit in a king frame for couples who don’t enjoy the same level of firmness or softness as their partner. The recommended room size for this bed would be 10’ x 12’ – 13’ x 13’ depending on how much walking room you want.

California King – 72″ x 84″

For a large or an especially long bedroom, the California king can help fill the space and give you plenty of room while you dream. California king mattresses are the ideal bed for those who need more length than width. It’s 4 inches narrower than the standard king, but you gain 4 inches in length. It’s still 6 inches wider than a queen, giving you and your partner more than enough room to sleep or cuddle. It is also one of the longest sizes you can get unless you custom order your mattress. The recommended room size for this bed would be 12’ x 12’ – 14’ x 12’ depending on your space.

Each person has their own preference as to what size and type of mattress they want, how much size they need, and what type of budget they have to work with. A mattress is a big investment and although it may need some time to break-in, you should be completely satisfied with what you buy at every stage. If you find you still need help making your decision, stop by and let the That Mattress Place Corpus Christi team show you how real customer service should be and get you on your way to your best night’s sleep today!

CertiPUR-US and Why It Matters 1024 1024 Jonathan Swindle

CertiPUR-US and Why It Matters

Modern mattresses have come a long way from straw, cotton, and coil springs – all the way to memory foam, which itself has undergone many improvements in just a few short years. You can’t log in to Facebook without seeing ads for companies like Nectar Sleep, Purple, and Casper touting gel memory foam, cooling covers, and all sorts of variations in thickness and type to appeal to your comfort. You can even order a memory foam mattress online from Amazon or Walmart without ever having to step foot in a store and get it delivered right to your door, neatly rolled in a box.

However, sleep accounts for one-third of the average persons’ life. A good, restful night’s sleep helps to restore your body and even plays a factor in your mood, memory, and cognitive function. Typical memory foam mattresses are known to trap body heat and may also contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde and isocyanates. Isocyanates can cause skin irritation, asthma, and include compounds classified as potential human carcinogens and are known to cause cancer in animals.  For such an important function in your life, doesn’t it make sense to invest in your health and purchase the best product you can buy?

That’s why That Mattress Place Corpus Christi now offers CertiPUR-US® products. When you buy products containing certified foam, you can be confident that the flexible polyurethane foam inside meets CertiPUR-US® standards for content, emissions, and durability, and has been analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories. CertiPUR-US® products are made without ozone depleters, mercury, formaldehyde, and phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The That Mattress Place Corpus Christi team will also go above and beyond to make sure you get the best deal possible and are 100% satisfied with your purchase.
